What GeoGuessr charges, and what you get for it

GeoGuessr's free tier is the Daily Challenge: five locations a day, and you need an account to play them. Everything else sits behind one of two plans. Unlimited is USD 6.99 a month, or USD 47.88 if you pay for a year up front, which GeoGuessr's checkout page shows as USD 3.99 a month. Elite is USD 10.99 a month or USD 71.88 a year, and adds an avatar, flair and monthly rewards on top. The prices went up in January 2026.

It is worth saying what that money pays for. Google charges for every Street View panorama a site loads, and a game that loads thousands of them an hour has a real bill. GeoGuessr covers it with subscriptions and employs a team that has been polishing the game for over a decade. That shows. The interface is slick, the modes are many, and the competitive scene is organised down to an official World Cup.

WorldGuessr has no subscription and nothing locked. Every mode, every map, ranked play, parties, map making, all of it is free, and the bill is covered by banner ads. The trade is straightforward: you see ads around the game, and you never see a paywall inside it.

Playing without an account

On GeoGuessr you need an account before you can do anything, including the free Daily Challenge. On WorldGuessr you can open the site and start a round. A free account only matters if you want ranked duels, 2v2, or your progress saved across devices.

That difference is bigger than it sounds if you play in a classroom, at a friend's house, or on a shared computer. It is also what lets WorldGuessr run on game portals such as Coolmath Games and Poki, which only carry games that work without a sign-up.

Maps

GeoGuessr has 122 official country maps to WorldGuessr's 93. Those 29 extra countries are real, and if you want to drill a specific small territory GeoGuessr is more likely to have it. Its free page says '1000+ official and community maps', which is a marketing line rather than a count; what matters is that making one needs a paid plan.

WorldGuessr has 72,316 community maps at the time of writing, each with its own page, and making one is free. The 93 official country maps sit alongside them, 20 of those with a short guide on how to recognise that country.

Multiplayer and ranked

WorldGuessr's ranked duels use the same format as GeoGuessr's. Both players start with a health bar (5,000 on WorldGuessr), every round the weaker guess loses the gap between the two scores, and the match ends when someone reaches zero. GeoGuessr's competitive mode sorts players into divisions from Bronze to Champion and needs a subscription. WorldGuessr's duels are free, use a rating that moves after every match, place you in one of five leagues from Trekker up to Legend, and put you back into the same match if your connection drops.

For playing with friends, GeoGuessr's parties hold up to 100 people. The host needs a paid plan; the people joining do not. WorldGuessr's parties hold up to 200, nobody needs to pay, nobody needs an account, and a party can split into team duels without leaving the lobby.

GeoGuessr has more ways to play against others. Team Duels, Battle Royale, and Co-op all exist there and not here. WorldGuessr has 2v2 and an unranked queue if you want a quick match without a rating on the line.

Modes

This is where GeoGuessr's decade shows most clearly. Beyond the classic round it has Battle Royale, Co-op, Explorer, Bullseye, quizzes, and a steady stream of seasonal events. WorldGuessr has the classic round, No Move and NMPZ, a daily challenge, Country Guesser and Continent Guesser, duels, 2v2 and parties. They are the same modes as GeoGuessr's, built the same way, so nothing needs relearning; there are just fewer of them.

One thing WorldGuessr does that GeoGuessr does not is draw the No Move panorama itself instead of using Google's viewer, which means no road name labels and no Google controls on screen in those modes. Moving rounds on WorldGuessr use Google's own Street View panorama, so road names show there just as they do on GeoGuessr. Only No Move and NMPZ rounds use WorldGuessr's renderer.

Apps, languages and platforms

GeoGuessr is on Android, iOS and Steam, and is translated into 12 languages. WorldGuessr has native Android and iOS apps (the Android app is rated 4.8 out of 5 by a little under 700 people at the time of writing) and is translated into five languages: English, German, Spanish, French and Russian. If you play in Portuguese, Japanese or Korean, GeoGuessr has you covered and WorldGuessr does not yet.

Who makes them, and whether you can see the code

GeoGuessr is made by GeoGuessr AB, a company in Stockholm, and has been since Anton Wallén built the first version in 2013. Its code is closed, which is normal for a commercial product.

WorldGuessr is made by one developer. WorldGuessr's code is public at github.com/codergautam/worldguessr under the PolyForm Noncommercial license. That is not the same as open source in the strict sense, because you may not sell it or run it commercially, but anyone can read how locations are picked, how scoring works and how ratings move, and can run their own copy for personal or classroom use.

Where GeoGuessr is simply better

We would rather say this ourselves than have you find out. GeoGuessr has more modes, more official maps, more languages, a Steam version, a competitive scene with an official World Championship, and the kind of polish that only a paid team produces. If money is not the question, it is the more complete game, and it is the one the professionals play.
